Did you know that...
There is a difference between the PAP test and the HPV test.
Two (2) tests are used in Quebec to screen for cervical cancer: the Pap test, commonly known as the Pap smear, and the HPV (human papillomavirus) test.
PAP test
The Pap test is used to detect abnormal cells and precancerous lesions on the cervix. It is also known as a Papanicolaou test or cervical cytology. A positive result does not automatically mean that you have cervical cancer. Follow-up or additional tests are necessary to confirm the result.
HPV test
The HPV test detects the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infection occurs before abnormal cells or precancerous lesions appear.
Who should take these tests?
All people with a uterus who are sexually active, or have been in the past, should have regular PAP tests.
Recommended interval
Between screening tests
PAP test
It is recommended that you have a screening test every two (2) or three (3) years.
HPV test
It is recommended that you get screened every five (5) years.
