Tetanus
The target audience
- People aged 50 and over for booster dose
- Travelers without access to medical services (under five (5))
- Workers who handle contaminated materials such as metal, wastewater, etc.
- Adults who have not received a tetanus vaccine since the age of 10
- All persons aged 18 and older with a contaminated wound who have not received a tetanus vaccine within the past five (5) years.
Symptoms
Symptoms usually appear within two (2) weeks after the start of infection.
The most common symptoms are:
- Sudden cramps and stiffness in the neck and/or facial muscles.
Other symptoms that may be present:
- Headaches
- Difficulty swallowing
- Jaw lock
- Body stiffening and muscles contracting in a jerky, involuntary manner
- Fever and sweating
- High blood pressure
Complications
- Death
Transmission
Contact of a wound or cut with soil, dust, saliva, or feces from humans or animals. Activities such as gardening, cooking, or walking on the beach may pose a risk of contracting tetanus.
Prevention
- Wearing sandals when walking on the beach
- Wearing gardening gloves
- Being safe with knives when cooking
- Avoid walking barefoot outdoors
- Keep your vaccinations up to date
