Cleaning the Pessary

What is the Pessary used for?

A pessary is prescribed by a doctor to treat prolapse in women: bladder, uterus, vagina, rectum.

There are several types of pessaries, and your doctor will choose the one that is best for you. A pessary is a silicone device shaped like a ring, cube, or disc that is inserted into the vagina to support these organs in place. It is held in place by the pelvic muscles.

How often should it be cleaned?

The pessary must be removed every month or every two (2) months for cleaning. Some dexterity is required to remove and replace the pessary.

PICC Line care

What is the Picc Line used for?

It is a catheter inserted into a vein in the arm that goes directly into a large vein near the heart. It is usually inserted by the radiology department. It is used to administer intravenous medication, provide nutritional supplements, administer blood transfusions, or draw blood. Caring for the PICC line helps prevent infections and keep the vein open.

How often should it be cleaned?

It is important to clean the PICC line every seven (7) days. However, if the dressing is dirty, wet, or loose, it should be changed immediately.

PICC Line care

What does the consultation include?

  • Assessment of the catheter insertion site and surrounding skin
  • Assessment of overall health status
  • PICC Line care: dressing change, cap replacement, and irrigation

Stoma care

What is the purpose of a stoma?

A stoma is a surgical procedure that allows feces or urine to be diverted from the natural passageway to another location, such as a piece of skin. Stoma care is used to prevent complications related to the stoma and leakage.

How often should it be cleaned and replaced?

First, the bag must be cleaned and emptied daily at home. However, the skin barrier (flange) and collection bag must be changed every five (5) to seven (7) days or as needed if there is a leak.

It is recommended to perform daily care when the digestive system, i.e., the intestines, is less active, i.e., in the morning on an empty stomach, before meals, or 2 to 3 hours after meals.

Stoma care

What does the consultation include?

  • Assessment of the stoma (mucosa) and surrounding skin
  • Cleaning the stoma
  • Replacement of collar and collection bag
  • Ostomy education as needed
  • Gentle stoma fitting

Urinary catheter care

What is a urinary catheter used for?

A urinary catheter is a tube that allows urine to be drained from the bladder via a tube and a collection bag. Urinary catheter care is used to prevent infections and blockages in the catheter.

How often should the probe and collection bag be changed?

For changing the urinary catheter, it depends on the manufacturer:

  • Once a month for silicone probes
  • Once a week for latex probes
  • Once every two weeks for silicone latex probes

We change the collection bag when changing the urinary catheter.

Urinary catheter care

What does the consultation include?

  • Health assessment
  • Installation of the urinary catheter and collection bag
  • Instruction on how to care for the tube at home and how to empty the tube while maintaining proper hygiene.
  • Recognizing the signs and symptoms of infection

Venous catheter care

What is the purpose of a venous catheter?

It is an intravenous device that avoids the need to insert a needle each time medication is administered and provides access to a vein.

How often should the catheter be cleaned, changed, or removed?

  • At most every 96 hours in adults
  • In case of local or general complications
  • In case of contamination, leakage or spillage
  • After assessing the irrelevance of maintaining the system
  • As soon as possible, if installed under improper aseptic conditions.

The extender is changed at the same time as the catheter because it is considered part of the catheter.

It is recommended that the infusion device, tubing, and accessories be changed each time the catheter is changed, i.e., every 96 hours.
