Hepatitis A & B

Hepatitis A, B, and C are inflammations of the liver caused by different viruses.
There are different vaccines to protect against hepatitis A and B. However, there is no vaccine that protects against hepatitis C.

Symptoms

People infected with hepatitis A, B, or C viruses do not always have symptoms. When people do have symptoms, they appear within a different time frame depending on the type of hepatitis:

  • Hepatitis A: 15 to 50 days (average 28 days) after infection with the virus;
  • Hepatitis B: one (1) to six (6) months (average 2 to 3 months) after infection with the virus.

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting
  • Stomach ache
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Yellow skin and white part of eyes (jaundice)
  • Light-colored stools and dark urine

Complications

Chronic carriers of hepatitis B and C are at risk of complications.

Transmission

An infected person can transmit hepatitis A, B, or C even if they have no symptoms.

The hepatitis A virus is present in the stool of an infected person. Stool can end up in food, water, or on various surfaces. It is not always visible.

Means of transmission

  • Consumption of contaminated water or food
  • Consommation d’eau ou d’aliments contaminés
  • Contact between the mouth and the anus
  • Sharing sex toys
  • Preparation or consumption of drugs in unhygienic conditions

  • Avoid raw vegetables
  • Eat only fruits with peel

Hepatitis B

Transmission

An infected person can transmit hepatitis A, B, or C even if they have no symptoms.

The hepatitis B virus is transmitted through sexual contact or blood.

Means of transmission

  • Vaginal intercourse
  • Anal sex
  • Sharing sex toys
  • Sexual transmission can occur even without orgasm or ejaculation.
  • Sharing equipment used to prepare, inject, or inhale drugs
  • Tattooing or piercing with non-sterile equipment
  • Contact between a blood-contaminated liquid and damaged skin (e.g., through a bite, sting, cut, such as from a shell at the beach, or a wound)
  • Contact between a contaminated liquid and a mucous membrane (e.g., lining the mouth or female and male genital organs)
  • Blood transfusion, when transfusion safety measures are not applied (these measures are applied in Canada)
  • An infected mother can also pass hepatitis B to her baby during pregnancy or during childbirth.

Prevention

  • Vaccination
  • Wear water shoes or sandals on the beach
  • Condom use
  • Avoid sharing sex toys or covering them with condoms
  • Change condoms between partners

A person should get tested as soon as they have exhibited risky behavior.

  • Unprotected sex
  • Sharing equipment used to prepare, inject, or inhale drugs
  • Tattooing or piercing with non-sterile equipment
